Over the past however many weeks I have been venturing into pastures new (pun intended) and trying my hand at landscapes. ‘Frustrated’ is such an inadequate word to describe my emotional state at failing to render anything (with one exception) in landscape painting acceptable to me – It’s best that I leave the other words that better describe it in the studio with countless dissguarded panels.
For someone used to working from life the main difficulty I have encountered is using photographic references so I look forward to working outside in the country and on the coast directly from nature when the lockdown lifts further to allow this.
In the meantime needs are must so I have been outrageously commercial and returned to a theme that a few people liked a while ago. This is a bigger painting than its predecessor and the coloured mugs are in a different order. My mathematical advisors inform me that there are 24 different ways to order the colours of these mugs in the stack – which leaves another 22 potential paintings, but on balance . . .
