Norfolk Jonquils 1
Oil on Linen
I dare say that we could all do with cheering up in these strangely dark sinister days of climate change and pandemics – so here are some cheerfully colourful daffs. I have lots of these miniature daffodils, known as Winter Jonquils growing around the edge of my garden and in pots on the terrace. In my experience they last much longer in the ground and inside in a vase than other varieties of Narcissus which is great for anyone who likes to have them around the house or to paint them. I so enjoyed paintings these I think that I might do a little series of them.
My favorite daff though is the narcissus geranium which has angel white petals and an egg yolk orange cup. I was lucky enough to have them in my garden in France and the fragrance they gave off was delightful. I keep hunting around here to find some but without any success thus far.
On a topical note – As I counted the vast number of toilet rolls in the shopping of the woman in front of me on the supermarket checkout conveyor belt the other day I was reminded that Narcissus is of course where we get the word narcissism from. It is surely only by working together as a collective that humanity will overcome the problems in the world today rather than through fixation on the self.
