It surprised me that chickens have been a popular suggestion. Fortunately I have plenty of reference material close to where I live.
Less than a mile from here a small bridge crosses over the river Wensum where an old man had a small patch of land. He kept poultry and when he passed away the birds were left to tend for themselves but over time visitors to this pretty location began feeding them. Gradually their numbers grew and were added to when folk left unwanted chickens and cockerels there.
Today all manner of different breeds of poultry mix with Mallards, Moorhens and Coots from the river. Many people make feeding the birds part of their daily routine at all hours of the day and it’s a popular past time for families in the school holidays. I would wager that they are the best fed birds in Norfolk.
And its a real benefit having them there they slow down the traffic . . . well most of it.
